Barelang Bridge

Visit and take your best pictures at Barelang Bridge
One of Batam’s most famous landmarks is the Barelang Bridge, a magnificent engineering masterpiece that connects the islands of Batam, Rempang, and Galang. The name “Barelang” is derived from the combination of these three islands: Batam–Rempang–Galang.
The construction of the Barelang Bridge began in 1992 under the initiative of B.J. Habibie, the third Chairman of the Batam Industrial Development Authority and later the President of Indonesia. The project was designed to improve connectivity between the islands and support regional development. After approximately seven years of construction, the bridge complex was completed in 1998 at a cost of around IDR 400 billion.
The Barelang Bridge is not a single bridge but a series of six bridges stretching across the sea and linking several islands. The total length of the bridge network is approximately 2 kilometers, while the distance from Batam to the furthest connected island is around 70 kilometers. Each bridge features a unique architectural design, making the journey both scenic and memorable.
The most iconic and beautiful of the six bridges is Tengku Fisabilillah Bridge, commonly known as Barelang Bridge 1. This cable-stayed bridge connects Batam Island and Tonton Island and features a striking main span with cables extending approximately 118 meters. Its elegant design has made it a symbol of Batam and a favorite spot for visitors to enjoy breathtaking sea views and sunset photography.
The six bridges are:
- Tengku Fisabilillah Bridge (Bridge 1)
- Nara Singa Bridge (Bridge 2)
- Raja Ali Haji Bridge (Bridge 3)
- Sultan Zainal Abidin Bridge (Bridge 4)
- Tuanku Tambusai Bridge (Bridge 5)
- Raja Kecik Bridge (Bridge 6)
Thanks to the Barelang Bridge project, Batam’s administrative area expanded significantly, making it geographically larger than neighboring Singapore. Today, the Barelang Bridge stands as a symbol of Batam’s growth, vision, and connectivity, attracting both domestic and international tourists who wish to experience one of Indonesia’s most remarkable coastal landmarks.
